Anime: The episode begins in Zaban City before the trio and one of the navigators reach the Hunter Exam Hall. The navigator is the son Kiriko still in his previous human disguise. The navigator is shown reiterating his job description to the trio as they walk through Zaban City.
Extended View of Zaban City:
Manga: The manga gives a brief overview of Zaban City before the trio and navigator reach the Hunter Exam Hall.
Anime: The 2011 anime gives a much more detailed showcasing of Zaban City. The trio and navigator are shown traveling through what appears to be a bazaar. There are shops selling lamps, gems, jewelry, herbs, and pots. Leorio is seen casually observing the marketplace, while Gon appears far more excited at the sight. Kurapika is shown simply looking ahead while the navigator reiterates his job description.
Gon stops at a shop selling food; “It’s Zaban’s famous panda-frog-on-a-stick!” Next Gon stops at a shop selling brooches and jewelry. Leorio notes how Zaban City is a shady place, to which Kurapika replies how “Prosperous cities tend to attract all sorts of nasty types.” Leorio notices two men smoking a hookah next to a monkey, a woman reading a crystal ball to a customer, and three shady-looking men trying to sell jewelry to a boy and frightened girl. Gon is wide-eyed at all the new sights, jumping from shop to shop in excitement. Leorio yells to Gon that they’re going, to which Gon responds back and catches up with the group.

The Hunter Exam Hall Building:
Manga: The navigator mentions the Exam Hall’s address; “2-5-10 Tsubashi Street”. Gon is shown marveling at the supposed Exam Hall building. Gon internally wonders how his dad felt on his first try at taking the Exam. The navigator points out to the trio that he was referring to the shop next to the tall building, causing the trio to look to their right at a restaurant they refer to as “A Greasy Spoon?!” The previous scene’s pages are given blatant comedic timing. The trio are silent to the navigator’s explanation as to why the Hunter Association would use such a place for their Exam Hall building.
Anime: The navigator does not mention the Exam Hall’s address. Gon specifically marvels at the supposed Exam Hall building’s height, noting how “they have a really nice building.” Gon externally notes how this is his first try at the Hunter Exam, wondering if his dad felt the same when he first arrived. The navigator points out to the trio that he was referring to the shop next to the tall building, causing the trio to give a synchronized "What?" while looking to their right at a restaurant. The previous scene is given far less comedic timing. Leorio and Gon give a synchronized “Huh?” to the navigator’s correction about the Exam building. Leorio remarks “That’s true.” to the navigator’s explanation as to why the Hunter Association would use such a place for their Exam Hall building.
The Restaurant:
Manga: The chef welcomes the group to the restaurant and asks what they’d like to order. The navigator replies with “The steak combo.” The chef attentively asks if they’d like it grilled or broiled. The room is revealed to have a square table with the group’s food order.

The navigator states they’d like it “Grilled over a low flame, until cooked.” The chef confirms the order before telling the group to let themselves into the backroom.
The room is revealed to have a circular table with no food. The navigator tells the trio to wait in the room. Leorio asks the navigator where the others are, while Gon chimes in how he can’t wait for the steak combo (causing Leorio to stumble out of disbelief). Kurapika explains to Gon how that was simply the password to get them inside. Gon responds disappointingly about not getting to eat.

Manga: Leorio and Gon are shown eating their food order. Leorio questions whether the navigator’s remarks meant he expects the trio to fail. Gon asks why “so many want to be Hunters? Why do they keep pushing themselves through this grinder?” Leorio and Kurapika are stunned by Gon’s question. Leorio yells at Gon, asking the boy if he knows “anything about anything”. Leorio and Kurapika simultaneously explain to Gon how glorious it is to be a Hunter: Leorio calling it the most lucrative career and Kurapika calling it the noblest career.

Elevator Discussion:
Anime: There is no food order given to the trio, so no one is shown eating. Leorio notes how the navigator’s remarks meant he expects the trio to fail. Gon speculates how “candidates are willing to risk everything to become Hunters.” Leorio chimes in “But of course, my friend!” Leorio is the first to explain his reasoning for why being a Hunter is glorious, stating how Hunters make the most money in the world. Kurapika counters how Hunters are actually the noblest in the world.
Kurapika and Leorio’s Lecture:
Manga: Leorio and Kurapika simultaneously lecture Gon further on how rewarding a Hunter’s career can be. A hypothetical Hunter License is shown at the top of Leorio’s speech bubble. Gon is shown wall-eyed as he tries listening to both Leorio and Kurapika’s simultaneous lecture. Leorio explains how Licenses are only given to fully qualified Hunters, and that “with it, you have carte blanche to enter most countries, and use almost all available public resources!” He continues explaining how the license is a symbol of fame and fortune, and how selling it would “guarantee no one in your family would have to work for seven generations!!”
Kurapika explains how a Hunter’s real job is to “secure order in both society and nature.” He continues explaining how professional Hunters work to preserve and protect cultural artifacts and endangered species, in addition to catching wanted criminals and poachers. Kurapika concludes by noting how being a Hunter “requires profound knowledge, sound mind and body, and strong convictions! It’s a tough but rewarding career!!”

He explains how “once you’re a Hunter, most countries will give you a free pass! And no charge to use public facilities.” Leorio does not mention anything about selling a Hunter License. Kurapika continuously interrupts Leorio’s monologue by spinning the table top Leorio’s leaning on—thereby moving Leorio away from Gon’s face.
Kurapika explains how a true Hunter's job is to “protect people and natural order.” He continues explaining how professional Hunters work to preserve and protect cultural artifacts and endangered species, in addition to catching wanted criminals and corrupt Hunters. Leorio and Kurapika then reassert their beliefs on why people become Hunters—Leorio mentioning fame and money, while Kurapika mentioning “Profound knowledge, a healthy mind and body, and unyielding conviction…Those are the qualities on which Hunters pride themselves!”

Hisoka’s Formal Introduction:
Manga: A sudden scream is heard, causing Gon and Tonpa to look towards the sound. A generic-looking male examinee is shown shouting about his arms—both limbs having been cleanly severed from the elbows down. The magician Hisoka claims responsibility for the act; “Behold. Now you see them, now you don’t. No tricks involved.” Hisoka tells the man to be more careful and apologize when he bumps into someone.

Gon responds gratifyingly to Tonpa’s assistance—behind them two examinees laugh at the display, remarking to themselves how the trio are the latest victims to Tonpa the “Rookie Crusher”. Tonpa proceeds to pull out four juice cans, telling the trio they should toast to their new friendship and to luck. Tonpa proceeds to drink from his own can. Gon eagerly agrees to the request. All three accept the juice cans, with Leorio passing a can to Kurapika.

That was close!” Tonpa is not shown internally questioning Gon’s taste buds. Gon is shown looking inside the can as Kurapika pours out the juice.
Tonpa’s Apology:
Manga: Tonpa fakes a sincere apology, to which Gon states there’s no need. Gon mentions how it was lucky he drank first (which is odd since Tonpa technically drank first); “Taste is a vital forest survival tool, so my tongue’s trained to detect anything iffy.” Tonpa internally laments over how he took Gon for “a naïve twerp, but he’s a feral savant.” Tonpa internally notes how Leorio and Kurapika caught on quickly; “so much for my opening gambit.” The scene then swiftly transitions to a flashback. Nicholas further explains how it was actually boring finding the Exam site. Tonpa notes how impressive Nicolas’ method is—introducing himself while offering Nicolas a drink. Nicolas is shown using his computer to research Tonpa—giving an informational exposition about Tonpa’s statistics. Nicholas’ computer screen is visibly shown with statistical information on Tonpa. Tonpa interrupts Nicolas after being praised for his consecutive tries record—saying it’s no big deal and that they should drink to their new friendship. Killua’s Introduction:
Manga: Tonpa contemplates how only one rookie drank his juice: #99 Killua. Tonpa turns to look at Killua, internally remarking how Killua’s about the same age as Gon, but clearly naïve with a lot more to learn about life. Tonpa smirks, thinking how Killua will “explode” any minute now. Killua notices Tonpa and asks for another juice, stating his nerves are making him thirsty. Tonpa hands the boy four cans of juice, who happily drinks them down. Tonpa begins questioning why the first can’s effects haven’t kicked in yet, internally noting how drinking five of them will kill someone through dehydration. Killua informs Tonpa he’ll be fine since he’s built up a resistance to poison. Tonpa is surprised by this, thinking how Killua “doesn’t even know what kind of drug I used. Is he resistant to everything!”
