Hunter Exam Notification Letter:
Manga: Chapter 3 opens with an extra detailing the notification letter sent out to all Hunter Exam applicants.  The extra shows a confused Gon reading over the Hunter Association’s vague directions.  Behind Gon is some strange llama-ostrich hybrid.  The notice provides the date, time and general location of the Exam hall.  No further information is provided as to further test the applicant’s skill.

Anime: No such extra is provided in the 2011 series.  Rather, the notice is explained through a conversation between Leorio and Kurapika.  The conversation happens directly after the trio look at Dalle Harbor’s map.  Leorio complains about how the Hunter Association’s notification letter is too vague about where they’re meant to go.  Kurapika points out how it’s their task to find the exam site using the limited information given, and that the vagueness is simply another test of the applicant’s skill.  Leorio irritably replies how he already knew that.

Leorio and Kurapika’s Remarks about Dalle Harbor:
Manga: Leorio takes note of all the people at Dalle Harbor.  Kurapika mentions how “Most of these people are probably going our way.”  Leorio mentions looking for a ride to Zaban City.

Anime:  The dialogue is completely omitted.  Leorio and Kurapika are simply shown observing Dalle Harbor.

The Captain’s Farewell to Gon:
Manga: Gon thanks the captain for everything, wishing “fair seas to you!”  The captain, likewise, wishes Gon good luck, before giving him advice about where to look for the Exam hall.  Gon thanks the captain and says farewell.  Behind the captain is an eavesdropping stranger whose face is cloaked in shadow.

Anime: Gon thanks the captain and states “I had a great time!”  The captain, likewise, states he had fun as well, before giving Gon advice about where to look for the Exam hall.  Behind them is a clearly visible Hunter applicant, who notices the conversation and begins eavesdropping.  Gon thanks the captain, who wishes Gon the best of luck.  Gon returns the declaration and says farewell.  Behind them, the eavesdropping man is shown smirking as he walks off.

Leorio’s Dialogue and Actions:
Manga: Leorio tells Gon that the boy needs to "learn not to trust so much" and that they should take the bus.  Kurapika decides to follow Gon as he’s interested in the boy’s behavior.  Leorio remarks how he thought Kurapika was more independent and that he’s “sticking to what makes sense.”  Leorio is shown waiting for the bus, noting how it’s getting late.  While waiting, Leorio overhears two men discussing how the buses to Zaban City are traps for rookie applicants.  Leorio is then seen chasing after Gon and Kurapika, shouting into the distance for them to wait up, and how they shouldn’t go off by themselves since they don’t know what lurks on the hill.

Anime: Leorio shouts at Gon how "The bus to Zaban is about to leave." and that they should take it.  Leorio mentions to Kurapika how Gon needs to learn that you can't trust everyone.  Kurapika decides to follow Gon as he’s interested in the boy’s behavior.  Leorio indifferently waves him off, stating “Wasn’t very long…Nice knowing you.”  Leorio begins walking away, remarking to himself how Kurapika’s not as independent as he thought and that he’ll just take the bus.  While walking, Leorio overhears two men discussing how the buses to Zaban City are traps for rookie applicants.  Leorio is then seen chasing after Gon and Kurapika, shouting into the distance for them to wait up.  Leorio is shown catching up to Gon and Kurapika, mentioning how he knew they’d be lonely without him, how it’s no fun traveling alone, and that he decided to stick with them a little longer.  The trio’s journey to the hill is extended.  The eavesdropping stranger can be seen tailing them from behind.

The Number of Crows:
Manga: Two crows are seen silently observing the trio.

Anime: A single crow is seen cawing at the trio.

Noticing the Strangers:
Manga:  Leorio notes how there’s not a single person in the town they’re passing through.  Gon, however, notes how there’s a lot of people around, surprising Leorio.  Kurapika concurs with Gon, telling his companions to keep their guard up.  Leorio asks how they can tell, to which Kurapika replies “I hear them breathing.”  Gon adds on how he hears their clothes rustling, wondering if they’re all hiding.  Leorio tries listening to no avail, telling the others “Well, sue me for having normal hearing.”  Kurapika then hushes Leorio as the hidden strangers approach.

Anime: Leorio notes how there’s not a single person in the town they’re passing through.  Gon, however, notes how there’s a lot of people around, surprising Leorio.  The trio are then immediately approached by the hidden strangers.  While he has no dialogue, Kurapika’s alert demeanor, in addition to not being surprised by Gon’s mention of people, suggests he’s still aware of the hidden strangers.

The Quizzing Lady and Company:
Manga: The quizzing lady and her company are shown walking out from various parts of the town’s buildings.  The quizzing lady is shown to have a walking staff.  The quizzing lady’s company all look the same with no distinct differences: white robes, long hair, and strange masks on their faces.

Anime: The quizzing lady and her company are shown to specifically come out from behind two doors.  The quizzing lady and some of her company are rolled out on a wooden stage by the remaining company.  The quizzing lady does not have a walking staff.  The quizzing lady’s company all have white robes, long hair of various color, and strange masks on their faces.  The quizzing lady’s company on the wooden stage each have a distinct object with them, including: a trumpet, a drum, a horn, a crow (perhaps the second crow from the manga), a tambourine, and symbols.

The Quizzing Lady’s Introduction:
Manga:  The quizzing lady calmly notes “This excitement…” to the silent trio, before shouting how it’s time for a two-choice quiz—earning a puzzled look from both Leorio and Kurapika.  The quizzing lady’s company are shown clapping to the announcement.  The quizzing lady informs the trio that for them to reach the giant tree, they must go through her town.  She further explains how the other trails are mazes populated with “ferocious magical beasts.”  Leorio is calmly seen comprehending the quizzing lady’s instructions, while Kurapika blankly mentions how it’s another test.

Anime:  Leorio marvels at the bizarre sight; “Wh-What’s with the freak show?”  The quizzing lady calmly notes “Exciting…”, to which a baffled Leorio echoes.  The woman repeats what she said again, as does Leorio, who is shown getting increasingly anxious.  The quizzing lady suddenly shouts how it’s time for a two-choice quiz, prompting her company to play their instruments to the announcement.  The announcement earns a puzzled look from Leorio, Kurapika and Gon.

The quizzing lady informs the trio that for them to reach the giant tree, they must go through her town.  There is no mention of other trails with ferocious magical beasts.  Leorio seems confounded by the quizzing lady’s instructions, interrupting halfway through by demanding to know what’s going on.  Kurapika smiles in relief, mentioning how it’s another test.  Leorio finally comprehends the situation—confidently stating that he’s “a quiz expert”, before suddenly realizing they only get one question.

Gon and the Eavesdropping Stranger:
Manga: The eavesdropping stranger reveals himself and explains how he overheard the captain’s advice.  Gon appears unaware that the stranger overheard the captain’s advice.  Leorio internally rebukes Gon’s cluelessness.

Anime: The eavesdropping stranger reveals himself, prompting Leorio to ask who he is.  Gon mentions how the stranger’s been following the trio since they left the port, with Leorio expressing shock over such revelation.  The stranger then explains how he overheard the captain’s advice.  Gon does not show any signs of being unaware.

The Trio’s Decision:
Manga: Leorio decides for the trio—explaining his reasoning why—that the stranger can go first.  Gon and Kurapika have nothing to add to Leorio’s decision and silently go along.

Anime: Leorio explains his reasoning why they should let the stranger go first.  Gon and Kurapika both express their agreement with the decision.

The Quiz and Reactions:
Manga: The trio are shown to be silently shocked by the quizzing lady’s question.  We are shown Kurapika’s inner thoughts on the impossible question; “She can’t be serious! That is a subjective issue, rife with unquantifiable variables!! Are we to simply guess which answer she prefers?”  The stranger is shown thinking about the question for a moment before answering.  The stranger is shown to internally disagree with his answer, but figures the quizzing lady will prefer his response.  The quizzing lady is shown consulting with her company, before telling the stranger he may go.

Anime: The stranger is given a podium with a button to answer the question.  The quizzing lady’s company make noises with their objects throughout parts of the quiz.  Leorio openly disputes the question’s practicality.  Kurapika’s inner thoughts are not shown.  The stranger grins at the question and almost immediately answers.  The stranger uses the button on the podium to buzz in.  Leorio openly responds with irritation at the stranger’s response.  The quizzing lady does not consult with her company before telling the stranger he may go.  The stranger is shown telling the trio that you simply tell the quizzing lady what she wants to hear.

Kurapika’s Realization:
Manga: Kurapika is shown to hear something in the distance and tries alerting Leorio.  Leorio begins shouting back at Kurapika before the quizzing lady silences them both—informing them that any more speaking beyond answering the question will result in disqualification.  The woman then asks “Answer now—1: You’ll take the quiz. 2: You won’t.”, to which Kurapika answers 1.  Kurapika thinks how Gon’s picked up on the realization as well, noting “It’s not the questions, but what we hear and don’t hear!!”

Anime: Leorio is given additional dialogue about the quiz’s ridiculousness, exclaiming how “Different people would expect different answers! There is no right answer!”  Kurapika shows realization at Leorio’s response; “No right answer…I see!”  Kurapika tries alerting Leorio, but is stopped by the quizzing lady—informing them that any more speaking beyond answering the question will result in disqualification.  Kurapika simply thinks “Gon…”

Leorio’s Actions:
Manga: As the quizzing lady counts down their response time, Leorio grabs a piece of plank wood and begins practice swinging—thinking to himself how the response time is how long the woman has to live.  After being blocked by Kurapika and told to calm down, Leorio goes on an angry rant about knocking the quizzing lady’s head off, storming the Exam hall and busting some examiner’s head.  He then further rants about the uselessness of Hunters before Kurapika informs him that they’ve passed the test.

Anime: Leorio’s thoughts do not contain any explicit death threats—he is merely shown internally goading the quizzing lady to continue counting.  After being blocked by Kurapika, Leorio angrily states he won’t be satisfied until he teaches the quizzing lady a lesson.  Kurapika tells Leorio to calm down, who asks how he’s supposed to calm down.  Kurapika responds by saying that if Leorio doesn’t, then he will waste their correct response.

Kurapika’s Hearing:
Manga: Kurapika informs Leorio that he heard the stranger’s scream in the distance.  Kurapika theorizes; “I don’t think he got very far before encountering a magical beast.”

Anime: The dialogue is completely omitted.  Kurapika is never stated, nor hinted at hearing the stranger’s scream in the distance.  There is never any mention of the stranger encountering a magical beast.

The Quiz’s Conclusion:
Manga: The quizzing lady informs the trio how the real path is a straight road that’ll reach the giant tree in two hours.  Leorio openly thanks the quizzing lady after she wishes them luck.  Gon expresses his defeat in figuring out an answer with a big smile on his face.

Anime: The quizzing lady informs the trio how the real path will reach the giant tree in two hours.  Leorio simply gets flustered and smiles when the quizzing lady wishes them luck.  Gon falls to the ground and expresses his defeat in figuring out an answer.  Gon does not have a big smile on his face when admitting defeat.

Quizzing Lady’s Dialogue:

Gon and Kurapika’s Dialogue:
Manga: Kurapika and Gon run outside the house to chase the Kiriko.  Kurapika notes the Kiriko ran into the forest, but wonders which way it went.  Gon notices the Kiriko’s shadow and begins chase with Kurapika right behind.  Gon marvels that the Kiriko can speak, to which Kurapika notes that’s why they’re called magical beasts.  Kurapika internally questions how Gon didn’t know this.  Kurapika proceeds to explain the Kiriko to Gon—stating that they can take human form.

Anime:  Kurapika’s dialogue outside the house is omitted in the 2011 series.  Gon immediately runs after the Kiriko with Kurapika right behind.  Gon marvels that the Kiriko can speak, to which Kurapika notes that the Kiriko use human speech.  Kurapika is not shown internally questioning Gon.  Kurapika’s explanation about the Kiriko is moved earlier to the initial reaction scene—which is also told to Leorio and given extended dialogue.

Anime:  The scene shows Gon chasing the Kiriko through the tree.  Gon stops to sense the Kiriko’s presence, before resuming the chase again.  Gon nearly jumps off a cliff, using his fishing rod to grab a branch and stop the fall.  Gon proceeds to jump back up, where the Kiriko is waiting for him on top a tree—praising the boy before moving in for an attack.

Gon nonchalantly asks who the magical beast is, noting how the Kiriko isn’t the same one he hit earlier.  Gon asks if she’s the other Kiriko’s friend.  After explaining how he could tell the difference between the magical beasts, the Kiriko begins laughing, causing a confused Gon to ask if he said something funny.  The Kiriko proceeds to shout for her spouse to come over.

The Kiriko Pass the Trio:
Manga: The Kiriko introduce themselves as the navigators.  The daughter praises Kurapika for understanding her tattoo’s meaning.  The daughter mentions how the tattoos are ancient symbols most wouldn’t recognize.  There’s no mention where the tattoos are real, fake, or part of the Kiriko’s transformation.  The son praises Leorio for his medical diligence and compassion towards the son’s needs.  Leorio blushes and internally thinks "Shucks...Wasn't nuthin'..."  The parent Kirikos praise Gon for his extraordinary agility and perception.  Gon blushes and internally thinks how he never realized the Kiriko were the navigators; "Whapped him good!"  The Kiriko exclaim all three have passed and that they will take the trio to the Exam hall.  Leorio and Kurapika both fist bump Gon at the announcement.

Leorio asks what’s wrong with celebrating a bit since they’ve made progress.  Kurapika remarks how Leorio and Gon really need to think, which ticks Leorio off—kicking his legs while angrily asking why Kurapika has to “be such a smart-ass?”  Leorio’s movements cause his Kirikos to slightly lose control—both shouting at the teen to stop moving around; “If you fall, blame yourself!”  Gon laughs at the sight.
